Purpose and background

Zhoushan Islands, the largest archipelago in China, is located at the midpoint of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, and is one of the important wintering habitats for migratory birds.

However, with the continuous development of Zhoushan City and the increasing urbanisation, the habitats of migratory birds are constantly invaded. The life of migratory birds in the wintering grounds is greatly affected and disrupted.

We focused on the black-faced spoonbill, which used to be active in the southeast coast of China, and tried to help the black-faced spoonbill find their habitat in Zhoushan Islands through landscape design and planning, and explore the beautiful vision of human-bird symbiosis.

Planning and design

From the perspective of the black-faced spoonbill, the design depicts the profile of the animal by learning its daily activities, behaviours and habitat types.

Then, combined with animal portraits, GIS was used to superimpose and filter out the relevant geographical elements to obtain the suitable resting area and foraging area of black-faced spoonbill in Zhoushan Islands.

Among them, the part with obvious cluster effect was selected as the final habitat locations. After the habitat locations were determined, we selected six representative habitats as paradigms, and used different means to transform them, so as to create the ‘bird’s world’ and the urban landscape of human-bird symbiosis.
